Location

Emden is the westernmost German port city on the North Sea coast. The town is located at the Ems estuary on the north bank of the Dollart and thus in direct proximity to the Netherlands. With about 50,000 inhabitants, Emden is the largest city in the Region of East Frisia. The nearest major economic centres are Oldenburg (70 km), Groningen (50 km), Wilhelmshaven (60 km) or Bremen (110 km).

Port of Emden

Consisting of the largest tide-free inland port in Germany and one of the largest sea locks, the port of Emden is an important European logistics hub for goods of all kinds. In the tide-open outer port, users have about 2,200 meters of quay facilities at their disposal, equipped with the appropriate logistics systems such as ro-ro ramps and track connections. Whether it is general goods, project cargoes or bulk goods: The port of Emden is a universal port with excellent handling conditions and shipping services. It already serves as a base port for many companies and service providers to build and maintain offshore wind farms in the North Sea.

Economic structure

Emden’s economy presents itself in a variety of ways, although the automotive, port, tourism, logistics and energy sectors are the focus. A dense network of suppliers, qualified skilled workers, free settlement areas and optimal connections to transport routes in Europe and overseas make Emden an attractive location for industrial companies, energy service providers, freight forwarders, industrial and commercial enterprises, but also for other sector focal points. One of the largest employers in Emden is the Volkswagen plant with its subsidiaries.

Emden, with its approximately 34,000 jobs subject to social security contributions, is regarded as a job engine in East Frisia. More than half of the employees work in service occupations, and a further 45 percent in manufacturing.

Education

Emden supports the training of qualified professionals of tomorrow. The city offers a diverse school and educational landscape with several primary schools, three secondary schools, two grammar schools and an integrated comprehensive school. In addition, there are two vocational schools.

Emden is also a university location. The Emden/Leer University of Applied Sciences trains around 4,700 students in the fields of technology, economics, social work and health, maritime and maritime sciences. They appreciate the personal atmosphere on campus, the low cost of living and the proximity to the North Sea.
