City by the Sea

City of Emden

Living and working in Emden is fun: With around 50.000 inhabitants, the centre at the North Sea is the largest city in East Frisia and has a lot to offer. Whether nature and relaxation or sport and culture – discover the advantages of the city by the sea. A first view you will find here!

LIVING AND LIVESTYLE

Emden not only offers affordable housing in a central location or one close to nature, but also scores with an extensive local supply. The city centre is also ideal for shopping, followed by a visit to one of the many restaurants or pubs. Moreover, there is a variety of different events to enjoy.

Emden is also a university location. The University of Applied Sciences Emden/Leer educates more than 4,000 students in the departments of engineering, business, social work and health, maritime and maritime sciences. The students appreciate the personal atmosphere on campus, the affordable cost of living and the proximity to the North Sea.

Emden supports the education of qualified professionals of tomorrow. The city offers a diverse school and educational landscape with several elementary schools, three high schools, two grammar schools and an integrated comprehensive school. In addition, there are two vocational schools.

LEISURE AND CULTURE

In Emden there are numerous opportunities for sports and leisure activities, both on land and on the water. You can explore the North Sea and Ems cycle paths or the Dollart route by bike. Canoeing, kiting, sailing or surfing are also popular sports in the city by the sea. Wellness and relaxation can be found in the Emder Friesentherme.

Culturally, the Emder Kunsthalle is well known far beyond the region. There is also a number of museums and cultural centres such as Neues Theater or the Johannes a Lasco Library or “Dat Otto Huus”. Concerts and events take place in the Nordseehalle Emden on a regular basis.

SURROUNDINGS AND ISLANDS

Emden is located on the North Sea coast – the UNESCO World Heritage site Wadden Sea is right on your doorstep. You can quickly reach the offshore island of Borkum by ferry or plane.

The East Frisian Peninsula around Emden extends from inland via the coastal towns to the islands. A trip to the other of our seven East Frisian islands is just as conceivable as a tour through the Fehn and Dollart area with its white bascule bridges over the endless canals. The coast in Emden also offers a real North Sea feeling. You can also discover the green heart of East Frisia on long walks or bike rides through the beautiful landscape conservation areas.
